So often we read the Bible as just another book on our shelf. I’m guilty. You’re guilty.
We see the stories of God’s power and deliverance for His people. We read of the miracles of Christ, His death and His resurrection, and the promises He makes to us that will last through eternity. We even know the words of John, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1). Yet, by the time we close the covers, all of this often has become just words on a page and we continue to go about our day like we didn’t even read it.
This isn’t what the living Word of God is about. For it’s said: “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” (Revelation 1:8). The one who WAS. The one who IS. And the one who IS TO COME. We’re usually good on believing Jesus “was” and we’re pretty solid on the fact that He is coming again. So why do we read the Bible like He isn’t the “IS?” Like what is said isn’t relevant to our day today. That the stories of the those in the Bible don’t have application to our lives and our circumstances.
I encourage you today, to pray before you even open the Bible. Pray that God softens your heart, expands your mind, and that the Holy Spirit reveals the truths of God’s Word into your life. When we do this, the words are no longer just ink of a page. The Word becomes living in our life!
